Protect Yourself from Cold and Flu Season

Fall marks the start of cold and flu season. It is important that you take care of yourself during these months ahead. People living with lupus are at an increased risk for infections like the flu. Getting a flu shot is an easy and important step you can take to protect your health!

Here are some facts to keep you safe:

  • Some immune suppressants (medications that help to prevent lupus flares) can make it more difficult for your body to fight off illnesses like the flu.

  • The flu shot is updated every year and only works for a short timeframe after you get it because the viruses that cause the flu change over time.
  • Get the flu shot early in the fall before the flu season begins. Plan to get your shot by the end of October at the latest.
  • Try to avoid anyone who has a cold, flu or other contagious illnesses.
  • Germs are everywhere, so it is important that you wash your hands often with soap and hot water, and sanitize as needed.
  • If you feel sick, rest up! Stay home and notify your doctor.

Lupus Interventional Clinical Trials Program

We are proud to annouce the creation of the HSS Lupus Clinical Trials Program, which strives to advance toward the development of innovative therapies and treatments that will improve the quality of life of lupus patients. Learn more about our enrolling trials for active lupus patients here or reach out to Emily Wu, Primary Study Coordinator, at 212.774.2967 or wue@hss.edu.

Study Highlight: SIRIUS-Lupus Nephritis

Our latest enrolling study at HSS is called the SIRIUS- Lupus Nephritis Study. The purpose of this study is to see if an investigational medicine called ianalumab is safe and effective in treating Lupus Nephritis. The study will show if using ianalumab with standard of care (Hydroxychloroquine, antimalarials, corticosteroids, and immunosuppressants) is better than using standard of care alone. It will also compare different dosing schedules of ianalumab to see which one dose works best. If you have Lupus Nephritis and are interested in participating in this study, please reach out to Emily Wu, Primary Study Coordinator, at 212.774.2967 or wue@hss.edu.

HSS and the Lupus and APS Center of Excellence are devoted to improving the health of those affected by lupus. The LRA is an important partner in our work to develop better treatments for lupus and ultimately a cure. Through generous support from the LRA, HSS Scientists have been able to conduct critical research to advance the understanding of underlying causes of lupus and improve care for this highly complex disease.

We invite you to join our team to raise awareness and funds for lupus research and hopefully one day finding a cure. Learn more
